A call for sobriety

I’ve been reading the comments on our blogsite and its good to know that freedom of expression and intellectual debate are alive and kicking on the net. My only apprehension is that the debates are starting to get circuitous and nasty, therefore counter productive.

May I suggest that we please keep the insults and name-calling to ourselves? Also, that we don’t go overboard in our arguments. Easy lang, hinay hinay. Ingatan ang puso at keyboard. As the old saying goes, we can disagree (and do so with passion) without being disagreeable.

Rest assured that we have been reading your comments and will respond to them in due time. Please be patient.

Teddy and others,

Ok lang sana ang tagisan ng opinyon, basta pwera lang yung murahan at no below the belt punches.

In the end, it's the truth that prevails because it is based on the politically correct info, sound logic, and persuasive arguments. No amount of denial, disinformation and deodorizing will make Gloria's doubftul regime attain victory. Her cha-cha is doomed right at the beginning, it cananot save her from certain downfall. Gloria, Joe de V. et al., cannot go on twisting facts to serve their obsession for power. Read Isagani Cruz, Raul Pangalangan, Fr. Joaquin Bernas, and even Justice Artemio Panganiban about it for guidance. Even Solita Monsod, a solid GMA backer, struck the last nail in her coffin on this thing. One need not go to great lengths to understand how the law is perverted by the present regime.

Shall we say more?

In anyway, who needs refinement? Who needed to be reminded that this is a pure, highly political debate?

Highly toned but crafted ideas we have yes, but smut, degrading, bastos, cursing (pamura) statements
we have not.

As far as I read from the first trickle of comments last Friday, the smut does not come from this side of the fence. In fact it's coming from those lowly, ignorant comments who despise the batasan 6 for their resolute fight for the people's right and welfare.

The truth is, the other side has nothing to say in substance other than to slander and villify the batasan 6.

No wonder, they are on the same side with GMA and Sec Gonzales.

Sori, siguro masapol nga i rebyum pay dagiti postings ko nga umun-una. Sori ading ko. Ubing ka pay gayam.

Sorry to other folks watching us. This Ilokano debate will snare you to navigate your ship off course. If you know Ilokano, you may not understand what she (or he?) has been saying. It's an utterly confusing and misplaced debate. (Also, a debate like this between a known person and an anonymous is like shadow boxing, you don't know or cannot see your sparring partner!) The proposition that we started for debate, which I joined, is THAT GMA REGIME IS ROTTEN, SHOULD GO. Now, the other debating party is talking about Rwanda and NPA, or other Pinoys migrate to USA, blah, blah. (I'm nonethelss touched by her moving story about Manang Biday and her husband Bidoy, who were misled to join the NPA, while their children suffer. If I were Manong Bidoy, I would bash the heads of those culprits.)

Hey Johndoe,

Naay paki, pero klaro kaayo nga way kalibutan. Dear Grandpa Hawaiianguy,

First of all, let me apologize for writing in Ilocano. I really thought that you are a GI (Genuine Ilocano), FBI (Full-Blooded Ilocano) like my mother. I went through a great deal of asking my mother to translate my letter in Ilocano just for you. Please don’t get me wrong. I did write in Ilocano not because you do not understand English but I thought that my letter will get your undivided attention if it is written in Ilocano. My mistake! Instead of getting your attention, I confused you and worst, almost lost your attention and my intended readers haha.

Secondly, let me apologize again for not divulging my identity. I was warned by my mother/confidante that I should be wary of you guys because you might do something bad haha I do not want to disobey my mother and so I can not answer your query in reference to my age and gender haha

Thirdly, I apologize once again for not following or not sticking with your subject of discussion. Nonetheless, I hope that you would respond and forgive me for being relentless in asking you to watch “Rwanda”.

Finally, please let me translate my previous message in English so you and the rest of the people here can make sense of what I was trying to convey.

Here it is:

Hello Grandpa Hawaiinguy, Yes, I am still young. I do not understand why you have joined a group such as this. Aren’t these people considered Marcos’ enemies before? I’m sorry Grandpa Hawaiianguy but I was born in the 70’s and so I don’t know much about the story of Marcos hehehe Anyways, I have a story to tell you.

I met someone (from Ilocos) here in the U.S. who had a best friend who joined the NPA. Her best friend was very smart. As a matter of fact, she was a scholar in UP. To protect the identity of the person who told me the story and her friends, I will call the story-teller, Juana and her best friend, Biday and her husband, Bidoy. Unfortunately, Biday and Bidoy were recruited by the NPAs and they left their very young children under the care of Biday’s mother. After several months, the couple managed to show up in their hometown. Biday’s sister was struck by her deep anger and complaints against the Americans. And that was the last time they ever saw Biday and Bidoy. Isn’t it ironic that Biday’s sister is working here in the US to be able to support Biday’s kids? I wonder what will be Biday’s reaction if she finds out that her sister is now working in the country that she strongly abhors. I met Biday’s sister and she was teary-eyed the whole time she was telling me her sister’s story. I really do not understand Grandpa how can people just leave everything including their very young children behind just to fight the government. I wonder if Biday & Bidoy missed their kids. I don’t care how angry they were with the administration at that time; it is unfair to leave their kids just like that, isn’t it? Those kids need their parents, don’t you think? Did Biday and Bidoy do anything good after joining the NPAs? What about their kids?

If people here despise the Americans, then don’t go to America, right Grandpa Hawaiianguy? But there are so many supporters of this group who are working here in the U.S.? What are you doing here in the U.S?

BTW Grandpa Hawaiinguy, have you watch the movie “Rwanda”? Please do watch it when you get a chance grandpa. I hope that you do watch it and let me know why I do not support the CPPs and NPAs.

Thank you grandapa,

Anonymous

To (Ilokano) anonymous,

Good! At least you have the civility to answer me back, sans the insulting language you posted earlier. You even bothered poor mama to translate you in Ilokano, hoping to deliver those infantile remarks with effect. (Now you are translating it back to English, when I already tried to save you from that pedantic task by telling our readers what it meant.)

Why are you so afraid to divulge yourself? I have made myself known to everybody here as a decent academic. Another wild and unfounded generalization that all who oppose are leftists? madmen? terrorists? Hmmmm.

I will consider your insistent demand for me to watch your favorite Rwanda as soon as my schedule permits. Mind you, I don't give a damn if it is a propaganda machine of the right, the left or the center, provided the quality is good. Can you assure me of the quality? I will trash it outright, if I sense it as garbage.

Sorry to say this. That your question about pinoys in America has absolutely no place in the debate we started. (Pinoys hating America and being here? Another case of misplaced or irreconcilable syllogism. I see the opposite, they love America.) It only adds to the obvious meandering. Anyway, am glad that you acknowledged having strayed away from the subject.

Diyos ti agngina niyo amin!

By labelling people this way, you unnecesarily range them against you. Instead of having a few enemies, they multiply by the way you use the power of language. (Sometimes these terms cancel each other out.)

anyways, to melai, i don't know why you're reacting that way ma'am or sir. i am here to learn about your org and one way to do that is to ask questions, right ma'am or sir? of course i am scared because your org has been associated with the CPP and NPA. i am not trying to hide behind my inang's skirt. i don't feel comfortable giving you my personal information. i hope that you do understant where i'm coming from.

sir hawaiianguy, "Rwanda" won an award at the Oscar's a couple of years ago so i am sure that it is worth your time. i am sorry if i am not making any sense with my query - "what are your people doing here in the U.S.". I did ask you that because you guys have always complained against the U.S. and you are very vocal about it. don't you get my point? if you hate and complain against the US, then why do you even come to the U.S.? why don't you go to communist countries instead? i know that is not not your subject of discussion here but please just answer my question.

On the questions you raised: "Why don't you guys go to communist countries instead? Why do you always complain against the US but you like to stay there? etc. etc." Sorry to say this: you have already prejudged and stigmatized people as communists just because they oppose. Oversimplistic generalization.

Hello Sir Hawaiian guy and Miss Melia!

Sorry for getting back with you guys just now. I have been busy at work and busy touring my friends from California here in Arizona as well.

Sir Hawaiian guy, I added you in my YM buddy list but you have not accepted my invitation yet. Please go to YM and accept my invitation so we can chat via YM tonight or whenever you get a chance.

Miss Melai, are you saying that you are not a member/supporter of Batasan 6? Miss Melai, you are not the only Filipino citizen who left the Philippines and worked abroad as an OFW. It is your right to complain about the high prices of commodities in the country but would it be better if all OFWs unite and assemble peacefully and elect someone reputable (not like that person in HK. I’m sorry I forgot her name) to lead a united and strong union composed of all OFWs to ensure each and everyone’s safety, retirement benefits and comprehensive health and life insurance for each registered member.

I am just tired of seeing negative news about the country. I am tired of watching the rallies and the constant word war of the antis and pros on tv. I watched very briefly Satur Ocampo’s interview and I couldn’t help but get annoyed with his statements. He can never get my attention/approval if he continues on talking like that.
